1. Read and clear fault codes

Reading and clearing fault codes refers to the process of reading or clearing fault codes stored in various ECUs of automotive electronic control systems by using fault detectors or special tools.

During the use of the car, as long as the cable terminals on the positive pole and negative pole of the battery are not removed, the fault codes stored in the ECU can be stored for a long time. Read out the fault code from the ECU to know the location or cause of the fault and provide a basis for diagnosis and troubleshooting. Therefore, reading fault codes is the main task of self-diagnostic testing of various automotive electronic control systems.

There are two ways to read and clear fault codes: one is to use a fault detector to read, and the other is to use a specific operation method and sequence of operations to read. The car tester has a more detailed description of the fault code, such as whether it is a historical fault code or a current fault code, and how many times the fault code appears. Historical fault codes indicate that faults have occurred before (such as poor contact of the line), but they do not appear now, but they have been stored in the ECU. A current fault code indicates a fault that occurred recently and is still present.

Clearing the fault codes can only be carried out after the car has been running for a period of time and the fault has been confirmed to be eliminated. When confirming whether the fault is eliminated, a very critical step is to find out the operating conditions of the fault code according to the user manual or related materials. If the operating conditions do not meet the requirements, the fault may still exist. Taking the low signal frequency of the air flow sensor of the engine control system (the fault code is DTC P0102) as an example, the setting condition for this fault is that the signal frequency of the air flow sensor is lower than 1200Hz and exceeds 0.5s. The operating conditions for the fault code DTC P0102 are: start the engine and run; the ignition voltage is higher than 8.0V; the throttle opening is lower than 50%. If the above operating conditions are not met, even if the air flow sensor is faulty, the engine ECU will not issue an instruction to make the fault indicator light illuminate, which will cause the maintenance personnel to mistakenly believe that the fault has been eliminated.
