Currently, most cars use an external ground type alternator.
1.The basic structure of the alternator
The common alternator for vehicles is composed of a three-phase synchronous alternator and a three-phase bridge rectifier composed of six silicon rectifier diodes. The integrated alternator is equipped with a voltage regulator, and all use integrated circuit (Integrated Circuit, IC) regulators, and the structure is shown in Figure 1-15. The basic structure of an alternator is composed of four parts: rotor, stator, rectifier and end cover.

1. Structure of the rotor
The function of the alternator rotor is to generate a magnetic field. The rotor consists of two claw poles, a field winding, an iron core and a collector ring. There are two claw poles, and 6 bird's beak-shaped magnetic poles are formed on each claw pole.
The two claw poles are press-fitted on the rotor shaft, the cavity between the claw poles is equipped with an iron core, the iron core is press-fitted on the rotor shaft, and the magnetic field winding is wound on the iron core.
3.Structure of the rotor

Collector rings, commonly known as slip rings, consist of two copper rings insulated from each other. The slip ring is press-fitted on one end of the rotor shaft and insulated from the rotor shaft. The two ends of the field winding are respectively welded on two collector rings. The two copper rings are respectively in contact with the two brushes on the rear cover of the generator. When the two brushes are connected to the DC power supply, there will be current flowing in the field winding, and an axial magnetic flux will be generated, so that one claw pole is magnetized to the north pole (that is, N pole), and the other claw pole is magnetized to the south pole (that is, S pole), thus forming 6 pairs of interlaced magnetic poles.
